Canes Football Recruiting: 3 Elite Prospects Considering
As we embark on year three of the Al Golden Era, a critical stage approaches. National signing day (February 6) is days away. It’s another opportunity for Golden to inject hand-picked talent into his program.
Watching the basketball team launch itself back into national relevance has to make the football Canes a tad jealous. Jim Larranaga has his squad primed for the Big Dance after earning a top 15 ranking this week. It’s time to bet on March Madness!
Golden offeres a mediocre 13-11 record with much to prove. Signing the following three local stars would provide a nice boost.riva
Matthew Thomas
School: Booker T Washington
Position: Defensive End, Outside Linebacker
National Rank (Rivals): #2 OLB
Considering: FSU, Bama, Miami, Southern Cal, Georgia
The one they call “Six” is widely regarded as the top prospect in one of the the most talent-rich regions in the nation. The 6’4″ Thomas is fresh off a state championship slaughter after falling just short in the final game last year. A freak athlete with a knack for getting to the quarterback, he could easily have a Duke Johnson type impact with the Canes in year one. Miami desperately needs more star players on this side of the football and Thomas is as a sure thing as there is.
Alex Collins
School: South Plantation
Position: Running Back
National Rank: #13 RB
Considering: Miami, Arkansas, Florida, FSU
It’s not exactly a position of immediate need for the Canes with Duke Johnson running the show for at least two more years. But in today’s game, a tandem of backs is needed every Saturday. He runs hard and violent, craving contact before using his burst to bust loose to the outside. A Collins/Johnson backfield would be dynamic from day one. Envision a more compact Steven Jackson.
Stacy Coley
School: Northeast
Position: WR
National Rank: #13 WR
Considering: Miami, Florida, FSU, USF, Louisville, Syracuse
Coley’s light stature doesn’t bring fear into the defense, but his ability to go up and get the football does. He’s a natural who tortures the secondary via the long ball. Coley is the type of specimen who will improve at each level. Just wait until he adds another 15 pounds of muscle to his 6’1 frame. He will be uncontainable.
