Dolphins to target Reggie Bush?

While the NFL remains on pause until a new Collective Bargaining Agreement is inked, it’s no secret teams are taking the necessary measures to ready themselves for when offseason activities resume.

One potential target likely hitting free agency who should intrigue the Miami Dolphins is six-year speedster Reggie Bush. While he isn’t a free agent, he will count $16 million against the Saints’ cap next season, which will absolutely lead to a release. They would save $12.5 million in cap space by cutting ties with the former USC product. Even if they intend to bring him back, it won’t be on his current contract.

Should the cement-footed, touchdown-starved Dolphins have interest?

With rookie Daniel Thomas as the featured back by default, Miami needs another proven running back, and one with some getup would be nice. When was the last time they fielded a burner in the backfield?

Bush hasn’t exactly lived up to the hype of a second overall draft choice. He hasn’t developed into the dynamic superstar we all thought he would be, in the mold of a Marshall Faulk. His 4.0 career yards-per-carry is nowhere near where it should be, not with that speed. At this point we need to accept him for what he is, a solid football player who excels in many areas, but doesn’t have the vision or intangibles to become an elite back.

He possesses a unique set of skills which would fit the Dolphins like syrup on an omelette (Don’t knock until you try it).

Bush’s versatility is his biggest asset. With great hands, incredible acceleration, and a dynamic player in the return game, he would elevate Miami’s offense to another level. He’s a player you always have to account for just by his mere presence.

Miami craves a player who can at least threaten the defense with the ability to score on one snap.

Although the Dolphins addressed their speed issue through the draft with the acquisition of receiver Edmond Gates, they need speed that can contribute right now. There’s no telling — especially with the lack of offseason activities and minicamps — that Gates would be able to make any sort of impact right away. And even if he is, aren’t two explosive players allowed on the field at one time?

Bush can be lined up in the backfield, split out wide, and even in the Wildcat if they choose. His versatility makes him more useful than any of the other tailbacks available including DeAngelo Williams, Darren Sproles, and Ahmad Bradshaw.

If and when Bush becomes available, the men upstairs should take a serious look at a player who will at least lift their offense from horrifying to mediocre. He’d also put asses in the seats. And his girlfriend would give cameras something to focus on in times of turmoil.
