Cobbs is going to have to step up on special teams.

Dolphins halfback Kory Sheets, who was the favorite to win the starting kick returner job this season, suffered a torn achilles tendon in practice today, ending his season prematurely. Sheets was also competing with Patrick Cobbs as the third-string running back.

Cobbs is now expected to be the starting kick returner on opening day, unless Miami brings in someone from beyond the current roster.

Sheets went undrafted out of Purdue  in 2009 and landed on San Francisco’s practice squad before signing with Miami in the middle of last season.
